Captain George Hall Moffett
Captain George Hall Moffett
From a post on Facebook by Kent Maynard: “Thanks to William Moffett III, here is a photo of a portrait of Capt. George Hall Moffett (1829 - 1875), my great-great grandfather. One of his sons, also called George Hall Moffett (1867 - 1950), was a lawyer and the City Counsel of Charleston, SC. Another son, Adm. William Adger Moffett, was my great grandfather, and a winner of the Congressional Medal of Honor. I am so proud of them, and so humbled by their example. So many men and women have given so much, so unstintingly, to make our country what it is today: Not perfect, but always aspiring to be better, always aspiring to be more just, more inclusive. My mother had this hanging on the wall of her bedroom: "La vraie charité ouvre les bras et ferme les yeux." We have come a long way -- and have a long, long way to go -- to form a more perfect and just union for all men and women of good will. But we will arrive at the promised land. Spero meliora!”

"An attempt to discredit the Republican candidate. "I have always voted the Republican ticket and shall today, minus Hugh Moffat. Why not vote for Hugh Moffat?" What follows is a long list of reasons for not voting for Moffat, including his non-hiring of "colored men" and his lack of sympathy for the poor. Moffat was re-elected to a second term as Mayor of Detroit and remained in office until 1875 as is born out by numerous news clippings which accompany this lot."
