OBITUARY
Robert James Neal, youngest son of Isaac and Katie Neal, was born at Allison, Iowa, October 2, 1891. He remained at Allison until the spring of 1917, when he enlisted in the National Guard Company at Mason City. This organization later became company D 168th infantry of the Rainbow Division. This division went overseas early in the fall of 1917 and went into action in the spring of 1918. Bob served twelve months overseas and saw action at Alsace Lorraine for 110 days and received a citation for assisting wounded comrades under fire.
He was wounded at Chateau Thierry July 28, 1918, shrapnel striking his right arm. After a few weeks he was invalided back to the United States and was a patient in the Fort Des Moines hospital for many months. He received his discharge with compensation July 26, 1918. He was sent to a government hospital at Palo Alto, Calif., a year or two later; after a few months he returned to Allison and later went to a hospital in New Mexico. For the past three years he was out of the hospital much of the time. when word was received of his death relatives did not know of his serious condition.
He was married to Zola Mead of Shell Rock six years ago, but was divorced later. Surviving are a brother, Frank Neal, of Allison, and two sisters, Mrs. Ab McMahon of Adams, Minn., and Mrs. L. C. Clarks {sic Clarke} Keithsburg, Illinois; also a half sister, Mrs. C. W. Klinetob and a half brother, Arthur Neal, both of Allison.
