640 #4976: HISTORY OF RUSH COUNTY, INDIANA: From the earliest time to the present, with biographical sketches, notes, etc. Illustrated; Chicago: Brant and Fuller, 1888. p. 379. Harrison County.

WASHINGTON GILSON, a prominent citizen of Center Township, was born in Rushville Township, March 6, 1829. He is the son of Andrew and Mary Gilson, who were both natives of Virginia. His boyhood was spent in his native township upon a farm. His father died of cholera in 1832, after which he remained with his widowed mother until he was fifteen, when he went to live with his uncle Thomas Moffett, also of Rushville Township. He was with him two years, and then went to live with his brother in Center Township, where he continued until his marriage, which occurred December 10, 1850. The lady that became his wife was Miss Mary J. Curry, who was born in Harrison County, Ky., September 10, 1826, being the daughter of James A. and Nancy Curry, who were also natives of Kentucky. Shortly after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Gilson located where they now reside in Center Township, where Mr. Gilson has ever since been engaged in agricultural pursuits. He owns a handsome farm of 110 acres, which is in a good state of improvement and cultivation. He and wife are the parents of two children, both living. They are Thomas L. and Mary B., both of whom are married. Mrs. Gilson is a member of the Christian Church. Mr. Gilson has never identified himself with any church, but is a firm believer in the principles of Christianity. In politics he is a Democrat. He has served his township as Justice of the Peace one term.

Questionable Information on the 1880 Census Record

The 1880 Census record for John Allen's household list only John, his son Arthur, Arthur's wife Leonora and a "GSon" (grandson) John L. M. Allen, whom I believe was listed as a grandson in error. (See John Little Moffat Allen's record for clarification.)

In addition to the four Allens mentioned above, the census record lists two Boarders / School Teachers living in the house: Emily V. and Helen Fax, plus one servant, Bridget McGovern. The one person who seems to be missing from the census record is Richard Fox Allen, oldest child of Arthur and Leonora. The birthdate that I have for Richard is August of 1877, so he should have been 3 years old at the time of the census.

John Allen's Place of Death

Pencil notes on the 4th page of the Family Record indicate that John Allen died at "Mott Haven 601 Walton Ave. Jan 22 1887 520 pm". However, no city or state is mentioned. In 2005, there is no Walton Avenue in Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island or Brooklyn.

There is also no Walton Avenue in Elizabeth, NJ, where at least two of his children died.

There is a 601 Walton Avenue in the Bronx. In addition, Google has numerous references to Mott Haven as a neighborhood in the South Bronx. So, the Bronx should be the place to start a search for John Allen's death certificate.
