    • DOC: Lancelot Moffett, son of Richard Moffett and wife Mary Haley, married Sarah, (Deed, B.C. 8 p.563 K.Co, C.H. May 1816) and had eleven children, naming them in his Will. (J.F.B. p 49) He left his estate to his children and four grandchildren, but stipulated it was to remain in the hands of his executor, daughter Sarah Forman, for a period of ten years, as he knew she would carry out his plans for building on his plantation. The children named in the will are: Sarah,m. 1st B.C. Forman in 1827, 2nd m. Josiah Gilpin, 1840. (His first wife was Sarah's Cousin Martha, daughter of Wm. Moffett.) Joseph Stansbury Moffett, married Ann Boots. After her death he married Martha Jones of Cecil Co. Lavina Moffett married Comegys Cosden, of Cecil Co. Charlotte Moffett married John W Clothier; Emily Moffett married George B. Saunders; William Moffett, Jr. married Jane F Smith; Milliminta Moffett married Wm. M Redgraves; Mary Moffett married Phillip Thomas; Julia Moffett married John Bossee; Lancelot married Mary; Rebeca Moffett, so the will states, lay dead in the house at the time the Will was made. He names his grandchildren, Rebecca, Julianna, Lewis and Elizabeth Bossee, the children of Julia and leaves them small bequests. Died at age 71 yrs 4 mos 16 days; buried in Moffett Burying Ground on what is now known as the Wm. E Jarrel Home, formerly addition to Flowers of the Forest. Marriage License of his children are on file at Kent Co. CH., Chestertown,MD.

      Lancelot Moffett, son of Richard Moffett and Mary Haley Moffett, married Sarah (Deed B.C. 8,p.563, Kent Co.C.H.May 1816) and had eleven children, naming them all in his will (J.F.B. p.49) He left his estate to his children and four grand children; but stipulated it was to remain in the hands of his executor, daughter Sarah Forman, for a period of ten years, as he knew that she would carry out his plans for building on his plantation. His grave is beside that of his wife, Sarah in the Moffett burying ground on "Flowers of the Forrest". near Chesterville, (New Market). The farm is known as the Wm E. Jarrell Home Farm and is on the corner of Bolten Road. It is now (1990) owned by Mrs. Eloise Weer of Baltimore, it is tilled by Mr. Schults.
      His tomb bears the inscription:
      "Lancelot Moffett, Jan 11, 1839 age 71 years 4 mo 16 days"
      The stone marking the grave of his wife reads:
      "Sarah Moffett, Nov 15 1824 age 49 years 7 mo 4 days"

      The children named in the Will (J.F.B. p.49) are Sarah (B.C. 1) Forman. In 1827 she married Forman and in 1840, Josiah Gilpin. Josiah's first wife was Sarah's cousin, Martha, daughter of William Moffett. Joseph Stansbury Moffett married Ann Boots. After her death, he married Martha Jones of Cecil County. Lavina Moffett married Comegys Cosden of Cecil County. Charlotte Moffett married John W. Clothier. Emily Moffett married George B. Saunders. William Moffett, Jr. married Jane F. Smith. Chestertown Maryland.

      John Moffett of Lancelot Moffett, deed of release of mortgage on land "Hurtleberry", 70 acres, and "Morpheys Chance", 60 acres, Dec. 17 1805, did in consideration of several debts for money owing to John Moffett, for better securing payment thereof with interest to said John Moffett, for $1 money does grant to John Moffett tract called "Hurtleberry" 70 acres, and tract "Morphey Chance" 60 acres, except the part of "Hurtleberry", George Moffett and wife Elizabeth sold to Charles Garford. Lancelot has fully satisfied and paid John Moffett.

      DEED B.C. 6, p.140 HALEY & GEORGE MOFFETT TO LANCELOT MOFFETT
      Between Haley Moffett and George Moffett of Talbot Co., to Lancelot Moffett of Kent Co.. Witness whereas George Moffett, gentleman late of Kent Co., deceased in his life did obtain and procure from Alexander Kelly, and assignment upon a special warrant to effect and take up 59 acres of land in Kent Co. called "Moffett's Lot", agreeable to the citation contained in the patent for the said land date Sept 29 1756 descended to George Moffett's children, William Moffett, Haley Moffett, and Jesse Moffett. Whereas Wm Moffett, since deceased by his last will devised his right to George Moffett, son of Haley Moffett, one of the co heirs of said George Moffett, deceased. Whereas the said Haley Moffett transferred his claims to Lancelot Moffett, and at the same time passed his bond with Lancelot Moffett, for the right his son George Moffett devised to him by his Uncle William. Beginning at a tree of a tract called Rumford, containing 80 acres of land more or less. 21 acres of which good rights had been show n before the issuing of the patent. Moffett's Lot also adjoins land of Joseph Mann, containing 38 3/4 perches. Whereas George Moffett sieged with 8 or 9 acres of land in his own right, being a part of a tract called and known as "Addition to the "Flower of the Forrest", adjoining lands of James Salis, Jonah Massey. Price 756 dollars.

      In the name of God Amen, I Lancelot Moffett of Kent County in the State of Maryland, being in feeble health, but of sound and defining mind, memory and understanding, considering the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof being desirous to settle my worldly affairs, and thereby be the better to leave this world when it shall please God to call me home, do therefore make and publish this my last will and testament in a manner and form following, that is to say. First and Principally, I commit my soul into the hands of Almighty God and my body to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executrix herein after named and after my debts and funeral charges are paid, and my wife's part taken out, I devise and bequeath as follows:
      Item: I give, devise and bequeath unto my son Lancelot Moffett his heirs and assigns forever, (subject to the restrictions herein after imposed) all my cleared and woodland lying and being in Kent County, upon which my brick dwelling stands and where I now reside, lying and being on the east side of the main road leading from George Town Cross Roads to New Market, except forty six acres of woodland hereafter to be described in another devise). It is my will and, I hereby direct, that the land above devised to my son Lancelot shall not fall into his possession until he shall arrive to the age of twenty five years, but that the rents and profits of the same shall belong to my daughter Sarah Foreman until he shall arrive to the age aforesaid and for the purpose hereafter mentioned. In the event of the death of my son Lancelot without leaving lawful issue of his body living at the time of his death, then I give and devise the said land and premises to my son Stansbury Moffett and his heirs and assigns forever, he paying to such of my children as shall be then living one thousand dollars in equal portions, share and share alike in one, two and three years after he shall come into possession of the said lands, without interest on the said sum of one thousand dollars until he shall ------of the said lands and I hereby charge the said sum of one thousand dollars and the interest thereon from the time he gets possession of the said lands. After my said son Lancelot shall arrive at the age of twenty five years, I direct and devise, that he shall furnish to my two daughters Lavina and Charlotte, if then living, and for and during their natural lives if they shall remain unmarried, and so long as they shall remain single, good and comfortable board in the dwelling on said farm and in the family of the said Lancelot, and I hereby charge their said board upon the said lands. In case of the death of the said Lancelot without leaving lawful issue of his body living at the time of his death, and the property becoming the property of Stansbury Moffett, as aforesaid, the said board is to cease in consideration of the said sum of one thousand dollars, charged upon him as aforesaid. If the said Charlotte and Lavina shall marry or either of them before the said Lancelot shall arrive at twenty five years of age, no board is to be provided for them, or the one that may, so many, and it is not my intention that board shall be furnished to either of them during widowhood.
      Item: All my lands and premises lying on the west side of the main road leading from George Town Cross Roads to New Market in Kent County, and also forty six acres of woodland lying on the east side of the main road leading from George Town Cross Roads to New Market adjoining the land of John M Armstrong which he purchased from Thomas I Mann the heirs of Dixon, and also adjoining the land belonging to the heirs of Samuel G. Osborn deceased, containing it is supposed about two hundred and sixty acres; I give and devise unto my daughter Sarah Foreman for the term of ten years from my death (she taking good care of the wood and timber on this and the land devised to my son Lancelot and cutting and using only so much as may be needful and proper for the use of the respective farms) for the uses and purposes herein after mentioned; And from and after the achivation of the said ten years, I will and direct the lands contained in the devise shall be sold at public sale after three weeks notice by advertisement by the said Sarah Foreman, if living and if not by Joseph Moffett of Kent County on a credit of one two and three years with interest and I hereby authorize and empower whoever may sell the said lands to make and execute a valid deed or deeds of conveyance for the same in fee simple to the purchaser or purchasers, and out of the proceeds of the sales of the said lands I will and direct as follows; that out of the first instalment the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars shall be paid to my son William if living and if dead to his heirs with interest from the day of sale, and the balance of said surplus of sales to be equally divided as soon as collected between my daughters and my two grand children: Mary Rebecca Bossee and Julianna Bossee; in case of the death of either of my said grand children without leaving lawful issue living at her death the other grand child to have her part, and in case of the death of both without leaving lawful issue living at the time of the death of the survivor, their shares to be equally divided among all my living said children, and this is intended to embrace & include as well their original shares as such shares or portions as they may become entitled to by the death of any of my said children. In ascertaining the shares of my said two grand children they are to be considered as representing their deceased mother & entitled to such share as she would if living be entitled to. In the event that if any of my said children who are now married or who may here after marry shall die before the sale of said land, leaving a child or children, such child or children shall represent the parent and be entitled to his or her share, and if any of my children die before the sale of the said land without leaving a child or children living at his or her death, his or her shares or proportion shall be equally divided among my surviving children and grandchildren, the grand children representing their father or mother and entitled to his or her share.
      Item: I give and bequeath unto my said son Stansbury Moffett my negro man Soloman a slave for life. Item: I give and bequeath unto my daughter Sarah Foreman my negro boy David aged about four years and a slave for life.
      Item: I give and bequeath unto my daughter Milliminta Redgraves my negro woman aged about eighteen years and a slave for life.
      Item: I give and bequeath unto my daughter Lavina Moffett my negro woman Harriet aged about sixteen years and a slave for life. Item: I give and bequeath unto my daughter Charlotte my negro woman Caroline aged about sixteen years and a slave for life.
      Item: I give and bequeath unto my son Lancelot my negro boy Philip aged about six months and slave for life.
      Item: I give and bequeath unto my daughter Emily Sanders the sum of two hundred and twenty five dollars, the interest to be paid to her annually for ten years as a firm sale, her receipt being good and the principal to be paid to her at the expiration of ten years from my decease, but my executrix shall have the discretion to pay her the principal before the end of ten years if she shall choose.
      Item: I give and bequeath unto my son William Moffett the sum of three hundred dollars out of thepersonal estate out of the first moneys that may come to hand.
      Item: I give and bequeath unto Louis Bossee my grand child five dollars to be paid on his arrival at the age of twenty one years and without interest until that time.
      Item: I give and bequeath unto Sarah Elizabeth Foreman fifty dollars to be paid on her arrival at the age of twenty years and without interest until that time. I also give and bequeath unto the said Sarah Elizabeth Bossee one cow, two heifers and one calf, the increase of a calf presented by her father John Bossee and which I have raised for her. If my daughter Sarah Foreman shall dane it convenient or think it expedient to keep the said four head of cattle it is my wish that she should do so, and present them with their increase to the said Elizabeth Bossee on her arrival at twenty years of age, without charge for raising.
      Item: I give and bequeath unto my grand daughter Mary Rebecca Bossee three hundred dollars to be paid on her arrival at twenty years of age and without interest until that time.
      Item: I give and bequeath unto my grand daughter Julianna Bossee three hundred dollars to be paid on her arrival at twenty years of age and without interest until that time. In the event of the death of either of the said grand children Mary Rebecca and Julianna Bossee before their arrival at twenty years of age the survivor to be entitled to the others legacy of three hundred dollars as aforesaid.
