    Obituary Than W. Moffitt, 86, of Bellefontaine, passed away at 9:42 a.m. Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, at Green Hills Retirement Community, West Liberty.

    He was born near West Liberty in Logan County on Jan. 13, 1925, to the late Harry Wilson and May Frosty Stout Moffitt. He also was preceded in death by a brother, J. Kaylor Moffitt; and two sisters, Mona Zoe Henry and Beulah Tennant.

    On June 8, 1947, he married the former Barbara J. Doughman before the Rev. Robert Wearley in West Liberty and she survives, along with a son, Roderick (Connie) of Defiance; a daughter, Janice (Jeff) Short of Akron; five grandsons, Matthew (Christine), Charles (Amy), William (Julie), Dustyn Moffitt and Monique and Steve Walters and Gail; one granddaughter, Wendy (Larry) Langston; six great-grandchildren, Aiden, Mia, Billy, Annabelle and Andrew Moffitt, and Chloe Langston; sisters-in-law, Pauline Moffitt of West Liberty and Nadyne Bodey of Lakeview.

    A graduate of Monroe High School, Than was a former insurance agent and claims adjuster. He also worked as a car salesman for Daring Chevrolet and retired from Dinovo Chrysler-Plymouth in 1989.

    He served as past master of Belle Center Lodge 347 F&AM in 1965, and also was a member of the Bellefontaine Lodge 209 F&AM, Lafayette Chapter 60 RAM, Logan Council 85 R&SM, Bellefontaine Commandery 61 KT, Antioch Temple of Dayton AAONMS, Logan County Shrine Club, vice president of Logan County 32 Club in 2001 and Bellefontaine Chapter 459 O.E.S.

    Mr. Moffitt served in the U.S. Navy in World War II, and was a 62-year life member of American Legion Post 173, Bellefontaine, life member of VFW, Bellefontaine, a past member of the Satan’s Angels Drum and Bugle Corps, and an active member of the Logan County Honor Guard funeral detail firing squad.

    He was an avid bowler and hall of fame life member of the Bellefontaine Bowling Association as a result of bowling a 298 game and a 731 series in 1973. He was also an avid golfer and past president of the Cherokee Hills Senior Golf League.

    A member of the Belle Center United Methodist Church, Mr. Moffitt’s favorite pastime was listening to polka music and being an active polka dancer. His interest in polka was brought on after being a member and past president of the Bellefontaine Hi-Point See Saws western-style square dancers. He also loved blue grass music by Jim Greer and the Mac-O-Chee Valley Folks.

    Craig Rambo officiates a funeral at 11 a.m. Friday in the Eichholtz Funeral Home, Bellefontaine. Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with a Masonic and O.E.S. service at 7:45 p.m. Entombment is in the Highland Memorial Cemetery Mausoleum, with military honors by the Logan County Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to the organizations of the donors’ choices.
