    • John was a Pvt during the Civil War. He was in Co M 59th Regiment, 2nd Cavalry. On 31 Mar 1864 he was transfered to Co K 1st Provisional Cavalry. He was mustered out on 13 Jul 1865 at Clouds Mills Va. at the age of 39 years. He joined the Union Army in 1863 and remained in the Army until the end of the war. His unit was under the command of Gen Sherman during the famous march to the sea. He also witnessed the surrender of Gen Lee at Appomattox Courthouse on 9 Apr 1865. In 1879 he packed his entire family up (except for John C. Early Jr) and included Samuel and his wife and two children. He loaded his family and all their possessions on the flat boats of the "raft men" and floated down the Allegheny River to Pittsburgh, down the Ohio River, up the Mississippi River to the Missouri River to Leavenworth Kansas where they went by covered wagon to Jackson Co. Kansas. John and Caroline lived at Point Pleasent, northeast of Hoyt before moving to Hoyt in later years. He was a farmer. [1]
