  • Notes
    • While his father was forced to flee from Scotland to Ireland because of his participation in the Covenanter uprising against the King at Bothwell's Bridge in 1679, William remained in Scotland with his family throughout his life.
This William is indicated in the account researched by the descendants of grandson William Moffatt and Barbara Chestnut, who state that he was the GREAT grandson of the Samuel who fought at Bothwell's Bridge. HOWEVER, the descendants of Rev John Moffat leave out this generation, claiming that records indicate that John (brother of the Wm who married Barbara Chestnut) was the GRANDSON of Samuel. [1]
