  • Notes
    • To date, the first record found concerning Oran D. Moffeit is the marriage records of Williamson Co., TN, years 1800-1850. It lists Moffeit, Orson D. (signed Orran D. Moffet) to Elizabeth Wilkins, June 25, 1823. Bondsman, Joseph Bennett. The will of William Wilkins, dated August 1805, names his wife (no name stated), his unborn child, and his sons John and James. He names James Wilkins as his executor. (Williamson Co. Will Book No 1, page 16). Inventory of the estate is recorded in the same book, page 18. Accounting of the income and expenses for the estate are recorded, as approved by the courts, through the years until the final settlement in 1824, the heirs being James M. Wilkins, John A. Wilkins and Oran Mofit and his wife, Elizabeth, who are the children of William Wilkins, deceased. In July, 1827, O.D. Moffett is listed as commissioner of Williamson Co, TN, division No. 3. In 1830, O.D. Moffitt is named on a committee for allotment of provisions for Mary Buckingham and children. The 1830 censu of Williamson Co, TN, names Oran D. Moffet with the following in his household: One male 20-29; one male 5-9; one male under 5; one female 20-29; and one female under 5. In 1831 O.D. Moffitt is named as administrator for the estate of Catherine hunter. In 1836 O.D. Moffitt paid taxes in District 1 and 3. He was also presiding Justice for District 3 of Williamson Co. No more tax records were checked for several years and it is not known when he left Tennessee, but he is listed in the 1840 census of Pulaski Co, MO, page 221, line 20. Those listed with his as follows: males, 2 under 5; 1, 5-9; 2, 100-14; 2, 20-29; 1, 30-39; 1. 40-49; females: 1, 5-9; 1, 10-14; 1, 20-29; 1, 30-39. The males 20-29 and 40-49 and femaled 20-29 would not be members of his immediate family. Also listed were three slaves. Total was 16, 5 engaged in agriculture and 3 in commerce. I has been said that Elizabeth died while they were living in Missouri, and this is probable as the youngest daughter, Mary, born in 1844 is listed in later census as being born in this state. Nothing has been learned by the compiler concerning the family from this time until 1850. Bible records give the dates of birth and death for both Oran D. and Elizabeth. The children are listed in Union Parish, Louisiana in 1850 census. Three Moffatt children are listed in the household of Andrew Pistole, who had married the oldest Moffeit daughter, Sarah J.: S.D. with his brother William; and J.C. with the household of James H. Green. The second daughter, Rebecca N. was married at this time and is listed with her husband, Isaac Emerson, in Ouachita Co, AR, Franklin Township. [1]
