Obituary CMSgt. (Ret.) Donald “Don” James Morfitt Sr., 77, a resident of Valley Head, passed from this life Sunday, May 28, 2017, at his home he built on the mountain, surrounded by family and under the care of Mountain Hospice.

Don was born at home in Indian Lake Township, Nobles County, Minnesota, Thursday, June 1, 1939, to Lloyd Morfitt and Edna Johnson Morfitt.

“Butch” grew up hunting and playing on the shores of Indian Lake, which began a lifelong love of the outdoors. He attended school in Round Lake, Minnesota, and enlisted in the Air Force Nov. 1, 1957. Shortly after his enlistment, Don married Marlene Avis Kutzbach of Sioux Valley, Minnesota. They had four children together and divorced in 1972.

Don is survived by his wife of 36 years, Grey Darden; and will be remembered with love by his children and stepchildren, Donald Morfitt Jr. and wife, Mary, of Woodbridge, Virginia, Denise Morfitt Nichols and husband, Tony, of Windom, Minnesota, Dawn Morfitt Francis and companion, Craig Beighley, of Elgin, Minnesota, and Terry Morfitt and partner, Pam Burgess, of Missoula, Montana; stepchildren, Jessy Darden of Tucson Arizona, Curt Darden and fiancee, Patricia Miller, of Los Angeles, California, Jody Darden Allen and husband, Dan Allen Jr., of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Meg Darden and partner, John Cashin, of Tucson, Arizona; 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Robert Morfitt and wife, Geri, of Sioux City, Iowa, Donna Lubben of Buena Park, California, Lloyd Morfitt and wife, Judy, of Topeka, Kansas, Mary Ahlers and husband, Richard, of Whittier, California, Steve Morfitt of Marshall, Minnesota, and Larry Morfitt and wife, Florence, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Don served as a vehicle maintenance superintendent during the Vietnam Conflict and also served tours in Colorado, Illinois, Thailand, Minnesota, Michigan, Taiwan, Maryland and Germany. He received the Meritorious Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with palm, the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal with three silver stars.

Don retired from the Air Force Dec. 31, 1980, having achieved the highest enlisted rank of chief master sergeant (E9) – a rank held by only the top 1 percent of all enlisted personnel.

Following his marriage to Margaret Grey Evans Darden on Dec. 24, 1980, Don and Grey moved to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where he worked to provide desalinated water for the U.S. Navy Base. While living and working in Guantanamo Bay (GTMO), Cuba, they found their dream property in Valley Head and spent the next 13 summers and vacations traveling from GTMO to Valley Head in order to improve the land and build their bed and breakfast called “Hello House.” Don was able to build and fix just about anything; the garage and frame shop were his domain and he lived to solve problems — especially of the computer variety. As a master carpenter, he partnered with Grey to frame her paintings for sale and local display. Don worked as a substitute postal carrier in the valley and enjoyed serving the people along his route.

Don loved being outdoors and enjoyed hunting, scuba diving, golfing, skiing and his home and property in Valley Head. Don also loved spending time with his family. He looked forward to hosting an annual Thanksgiving hunting gala and spending countless hours playing cards and dominoes.

Don’s request for cremation has been honored, and inurnment will take place at a later date.

The Randolph Funeral Home and Cremation Services has been entrusted with the arrangements for Donald James Morfitt Sr. Send online condolences to the family at www.therandolphfuneralhome.com.  [3
