  • Notes
    • William Trester Morfitt was born Aug. 13, 1878 in Johnson Co. IA. The James B. Morfitt family lived with William Tresters for 7 years then moved to Iowa county for 5 years. In the spring of 1886 they came to O'Brien Co. when William was 7 years old. William told of helping plant trees on the farm near Archer. He attended rural school and was a member of the Philby church where he sang in the choir.
In 1902 he married Lora Melissa Smith in a Primghar, IA. church. They lived on the James Morfitt farm until 1905, moved to Sheldon, then to Mitchell, SD in 1906. He did draying with a team & wagon in Mitchell for 2 years then farmed near there for one year. The year of farming was a disaster with rain nearly every day and very little crop. In 1909 James B. asked him to return to the farm near Archer. There they lived until the farm was sold in 1911. In Dec. 1911 William and family moved to Harris, IA. In 1915 moved to Jackson Co., MN and 1918 back to 6 miles south of Harris for 22 years. All this time he rented farms and in 1940 bought 120 acres of land at Business Corner, near May City, IA. Business Corner got its name from earlier times when there was a mennonite settlement in the area and this was the location of stores and shops for them. William and Lora Melissa lived here until 1958 when it was necessary for them to be cared for at a Worthington, MN care center. The farm was sold to Russel Morfitt and then to Glenn Recker about 1960.
Through the 59 years William and Lora Melissa spent together there were many good times as well as hardships. The depression years of the 20's and 30's were especially bad with bank closures, low prices and dust storms, but they weathered it all. They especially enjoyed the family gatherings at Christmas and various other times and visited the children often.
William's first car was a 1914 Model T Ford bought in Sioux City and first tractor a Moline 1918. He was among the first farmers to own a tractor and gradually changed from horse farming to no horses by 1940. They got their first electricity on the farm in 1940 when the R.E.A. was established. His last new car was a Kaiser about 1948.
