1823-Born at Springfield Hill, Dunscore.
1845-Moved to Ipswich (got to the docks and that's where the ship was going).
1850-Married at the Independent Chapel, Ipswich.
1864-JG Harrod & Co Postal & Commercial Directory of Suffolk listed as travelling draper and tea dealer - 1 Adelphi Place, Lower Brook St, Ipswich.
1871-(listed Moffatt)-living 31&33,Fore St, Ipswich. Woollen draper.
James set up as a tailor, specialising in tweeds, and at one time had a shop on the Cornhill in Ipswich. He had Tuddenham Lodge built, on Tuddenham Road, between Hervey Street and Christchurch Street. (AAM went there as a boy), but then he went bankrupt.Latterly, he had a business in St Helen's Street (the gabled building set back opposite Bond St), where he employed a few women and made suits for country-dwellers. He would regularly hire a pony and trap, making trips out into the country to measure upclients, and then when the clothes had been fitted and finished he would make regular calls to collect small, weekly payments. Sometimes AAM as a boy, went with him. Sometimes they stayed overnight a pubs e.g. Thwaite "Bucks Head" and AAM was intriguedthat his grandfather made notes in his book with an ordinary pen, which he dipped into a test-tube of ink in his inside jacket pocket.
There are large oil paintings of James and his wife, Elizabeth, by the Suffolk artist, William Symonds (1851-1934), these seem to be unsigned and undated. MMcM had a crayon cartoon of Elizabeth's portrait, which she told HWM is dated 1873. This equals the date of Symonds' earliest known work. AAM had the pictures insured for £20 each, which was probably the artist's fee.
1891-Living at 130,Woodbridge Road, Ipswich+wife and daughter, Jane (Janet). Listed as travelling draper.
1895-Died at 130, Woodbridge Road. Died aged 72. (Robert Hamblin b.1821 died in the same house 11 years later.)
