1841 British Census for Spalding, Lincolnshire, England
1841 British Census for Spalding, Lincolnshire, England
2 facing pages of the census show 2 families of Muffetts. On the left John Muffett, aged 30 with his wife Mary and sons Robert and James. On the right Charles Muffett aged 55 with his wife Hannah and children Thomas aged 15 and Charlotte aged 13. It’s possible, but not proven that Charles is John’s father - the ages fit, and the fact that both are Brickmakers makes the connection more likely too.

1870 US Federal Census for Chester Twp., Burlington Co., New Jersey, USA
Census spread over 2 pages shows Robert Muffett with wife Mary J, and children Sarah J, Rachel, Robert, William and Hettie. Sarah J is possibly the same person as Mary E who was aged 1 year old in the 1860 Census. The next adjacent family is John Muffett aged 71, born in England, so quite likely Robert’s father, and Samuel aged 16 - a son of John’s possibly and brother or half brother of Robert.

  • Notes
    • In 1870 and 1880 Census Robert is living adjacent to a John Muffett, born about 1809 in England. Since Robert indicates his father was born in England, it’s quite possible that Robert is John’s son.
