Notes |
- He owned 1200 acres in Gwinnett Co, GA (Goodwin Section) in 1860. Dates are from an oral record of John R. to Norris Maffett, an uncle. John was brought to GA at the age of one year, and is believed to have served in Co. E, 8th Infantry, State Guards, known as the Gwinnett Grays. John R. is believed to be the son of John Maffett, brother of Samuel Maffett, both of whom lived in Gwinnett Co. [Source 1]
Oral tradition says that he was brought to GA at the age on one year in a covered wagon. He and his wife were charter members of the Rock Springs Methodist Church founded in 1866. Sgt. J.R. Maffett mustered in Company E, Eight Infantry, State Guards, also known as the Gwinnett Grays, in 1863 & 1864. His house still stands on Old Peachtree Road in Suwanee, GA. [Source 1214] [1, 2]
