  • Notes
    • The Lindsay family bible says that John Jame Lindsay was born in Makeny, Ballinamallard, Fermanagh. "Makenny" is the name of a townland across the border in the Kilskeery parish of County Tyrone. Living right on the border, being from one or another of the two counties may not have been that important to the Lindsays.
John immigrated to the U.S. in either 1885 or 1886.
In 1886, John James Lindsay, then age 33, and Lizzie Hamilton, 21, were married in Muscatine by H.E. Wing, Minister. The minister's wife Vida Wing, was witness. His age is recorded as 27 at the time. This fact raises several possibilities: the clerk made a mistake; or John didn't want his bride to know he was that old; or he didn't really know himself. The marriage certificate was filed with the Muscatine County Clerk's office 10 Dec 1886. At that time, his occupation is listed as 'gardener.'
John worked as a sharecropper/farm laborer for Fred Hoopes on his land in Muscatine County, (probably a relative of W. H. Hoopes; or of Joshua Hoopes, who owned a farm in the Bloomington township, just north of Muscatine City). Fred Hoopes Lindsay was named after John's landlord, (it was common practice for an indentured worker to name his first-born after his "sponser").
John James Lindsay filed his "first papers," i.e., his intention to become a citizen, 2 Nov 1891 at the district courthouse in Muscatine. To become a naturalized citizen, an applicant had to live in the United States for five years, and in the state of intention for one year. He was naturalized as a citizen on 23 Oct 1894. His witness/sponser was Charles E. Brown.
On 1 March 1905, his family moved to Ridgeville (in the Franklin Municipality), Manitoba, Canada, where John's brother, William, had a farm. They lived in Manitoba for five years, farming wheat. John's son Fred went to live in Devils Lake, North Dakota in about 1905, probably apprenticing to be a carpenter. In about 1910, John James Lindsay and his family moved to Rock Lake, Towner County, North Dakota. At this same time Fred Hoopes Lindsay and his wife Mary Eleanor Parkes settled there, as did the Elmer Latham family. John moved to Eugene, Oregon in 1923, with his son Fred, daughter Hazel, and grandson Curtis. He died 13 May 1925 at 8:30 pm, at the age of 72 from complications due to bronchitis (nephritis, myocarditis).
