Obituary | The Valley News Today Shenandoah, Iowa July 11, 1901 Page 1, Column 1 ROBERT N. MOFFITT DEAD. Pioneer resident Passes Away Wednesday after weeks of Intense Suffering. Dead - Wednesday afternoon, July 10, 1901, at his late residence on Sixth avenue, this city, Robert N. Moffitt, aged 65 years, 5 months and 7 days. After weeks of suffering and patient waiting the end came quietly and peacefully to Robert N. Moffitt at 2:45 Wednesday afternoon. His demise will be regretted by a large circle of friends who have associated with him for years and found him to be an honorable, upright man and pleasant neighbor. While he resided in Shenandoah only about twelve years, he lived in Page county the greater part of eighteen years. He was a prosperous farmer owning a tract of land southwest of the city during his early residence here, which gave him a strong standing in the community. Robert N. Moffitt was a native of Ireland. He was born at Grace Hill, County Antrim, February 3, 1836. When he was but a mere boy, probably eight or nine years of age, his parents immigrated to this country, locating at Philadelphia, Pa. After a few years their location was changed to Kewanee, Ill., where Robert was educated and later married Mary Custer, to whom one child, Mae, was born. In the early seventies Mr. Moffitt came to Iowa and settled permanently in Page county. Twelve years ago the cherished wife was called to her eternal home and Mr. Moffitt removed to Shenandoah with his daughter, who has since been his constant companion, devoting her time and life to him and the care of his home. Her devotion during her father's last illness has been very pronounced. For twelve weeks prior to last Wednesday she had scarcely left his bedside and was always within calling distance. Before that she accompanied him from place to place in quest of relief from the excruciating pain that was gnawing at his vitals, sapping strength and undermining constitution. Reduced to a mere skeleton of her former self Mae has been a dutiful daughter and given every care and attention that lay in her power to assuage in some measure the pain that a fond parent bore. The only other surviving relatives, so far as known, are a brother in California and a sister in Philadelphia, neither of whom can be present at the funeral. Mr. Moffitt was an earnest worker in behalf of Oddfellowship and was the first man to suggest the establishment of a branch of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows in Shenandoah. Shenandoah Lodge No. 261, I.O.O.F., is consequently a monument to his memory. Originally he was a member of the order at Kewanee, but he secured a transfer and became a charter member of the lodge he was instrumental in founding. He was also a member of the Rebekah lodge. His ancestors were all Moravians, but on February 14, 1889, he united with the Baptist Church of Shenandoah with his daughter and remained a steadfast member until his demise. Funeral services will be conducted from the late residence on Sixth Avenue, between Maple and Walnut Street, at 4:30 Saturday afternoon, under the auspices of Shenandoah Lodge, No. 261, I.O.O.F.
