Notes |
- Andrew Moffitt (1917) was born in Raheen House, Queen's County, Ireland to William Patrick Moffitt and Bridget Heffernan. (But does not seem to be registered, neither in Ireland nor England/Wales). Andrew was the last of three (3) children. His brother William Moffitt (1912) was born in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, and his sister Elizabeth Moffitt (1914) was also born in Raheen. Andrew (1917) grew up on the farm until 1930. In 1930, his father sold the family farm and moved to the London suburbs. Andrew found his way to working on passenger liners after the family farm was sold. He worked on the Queen Elizabeth I and II for a long period and served on the Queen Elizabeth during World War II. There is a family story that tells of a hospital ship he was working on during the war, in the Atlantic, was sunk and that he survived on the life raft for a long time. He was said to have recuperated on Bermuda. After World War II, Andrew continued to work on passenger liners and visited his brother William several times until he retired in the early 1980's to the London area. Ruth Villeneuve (1920), his brother's wife, lost contact with Andrew in the 1990's at which time the family thinks he dies. The family understands that Andrew was buried in the London area and gifted money to the Catholic Church of the Holy Rosary, AbbeyLeix,County Laois, Ireland. Andrew's grandfather, Andrew Moffitt (1847), is buried in the Old Roman Catholic graveyard, Abbeyleix.
