  Notes from George West Maffet’s files as written by Wallace Willson Moffatt: Ellen Baskerville was born about 1820 in County Wexford, Ireland. She died 1862 at Amboy, Illinois. He notes that James Moffat married in 1834 and 1837. [1] Not 100% certain about Ellen’s birth date and parents. Note that the Illinois census data shows her as having been born in both Ireland and Canada. The death certificate for Cyrus Moffat indicates a birthplace of Ireland for his mother. 06/17/2000 phone conversation with Sarah Berneice Harman Armstrong: Ellen died before James Moffat. This may be why James relocated with Cyrus to Nebraska. [1] I think that Ellen Baskerville was born in 1828 in Tipperary and died in Ontario in 1831. Perhaps this is wishful thinking, and I sure would appreciate your feedback. Attached is part of a page from the 1850 U.S. Census for Amboy, Lee County, Illinois. The names and dates agree with the information of the 1860 U.S. Census for Amboy, Lee County, Illinois. (If the image does not come through, I would be happy to fax it or send it to you via U.S. Post.) Interesting is the fact that Canada is listed as the birth place for Ellen and several children. I thought the "Ca." listed as birth place for the children on the 1860 census was California. Something different, however, is the fact that the 1860 census listed Ellen as having been born in Ireland. I took another look at your records at the Mormon website and noticed that they show a birth place of Ireland. Also, the death certificate of Cyrus Moffat, a son of James and Ellen, shows Ellen with a birthplace of Ireland. If my arithmetic is correct, this Ellen would have been born in 1818 or 1819. With your records showing a birth year of 1819, this makes me so curious as to whether we might have her in common.
