    • My family records about James S. Moffatt's birth year is 1830, but from I do believe that he was born in 1838. From some of the census that I have found, it shows that he would have been born in 1838. His Mother and his father were married in 1837 according to a report in James West Maffet research and I believe it to be the most accurate research on the Moffatt family history reports
All that I have to go on is what is on his Tombstone at Valley Mills, Texas, but I really think that it is incorrect, because his Father was enumerated in 1832 in Canada, and this is the first record of him in Canada. It is 1830 on his headstone as his birth date, but that was probably a family error at the time.

Different census have different ages down for him.

I do know that the birth date of Aug. 12 is correct on all records. Back then, they did not always give their correct age, so it is hard to tell. He was older than his wife, Mary, so that may explain the different ages down for him.

James was born in Canada and when he was approx. 9 years old, he and his parents, James and Ellen, and his brothers and sisters, Ann, Lemuel, and Thomas (and possibly Margaret) came to America in 1847 and settled in Amboy Lee County, Illinois.

On the 1860 Census, it shows that he was 21 years old and living with his parents and brothers and sisters and that his parents had additional children born named Mary, Cyrus, Eliza, Samuel, Catherine, and Susan.

James's Mother Ellen Baskerville died Aug. 12, 1862 in Amboy, Lee County, Illinois.

There are records that show that his young sister, Susan, was only 3 years old when their Mother died and she went to live for awhile with her sister. Records show that part of the family were in Iowa for awhile, so I do not know if James, Jr. was in Iowa or not. Possibly?

I am not sure of the exact time that James came to Texas, but apparently he and his brother, Samuel, decided to move and come to the unsettled territory of Texas.
There were Indians and all kinds of hardships that they faced and endured to settle in the area.

The first record that I can find is of James and his family on a census in Palo Pinto County, Texas in 1880. His Father is listed with them as well. This would be our James S. Moffatt that came from Ireland and first settled in Canada before coming on to the U. S. On the 1880 U. S. CEnsus in Palo Pinto County, Texas Precinct 5; James is listed as living with his son, James S. Moffatt and Family as follows:

James S. Moffitt age 45 M. Farmer b. Canada Father born in Ireland and Mother born in Ireland
Mary (Pierce) age 30 F. wife B. Tenn. Father born in Tenn, Mother born in Tenn.
Alice age 11 F. (Daughter) B. Tex. Father Born Canada, Mother born in Tenn.
Josephus age 6 M. (son) born in Texas; Father born in Canada, Mother born in Tenn.
Lemuel age 4 M. (son) b. Tex. Father-born Canada Mother born in Tenn.
Surilda D. age 1/2 year F. Daughter born in Tex. Father B. Canada Mother b. Tenn.
James, (Sr.) age 82 (Father living with them) Born in Ireland. Father born inIreland and Mother born in Ireland.

James and Mary and the family apparently lived in the Mineral Wells, Texas area until about the middle to late 1880s and began their journey down to Bosque County, Texas to the small community of Cayote, Texas. Cayote is just outside of Valley Mills, Tex. and Clifton, Texas area.

James and Mary purchased land at Cayote and lived there with their family until James death on May 1, 1907.

James is buried in Valley Mills Cemetary in Valley Mills, Texas beside his wife and his son, Lemuel and his wife.

James and his two sons, Josephus (Joe), and Lemuel owned several hundred acres each there at Cayote and their land adjoined each other. They all worked the land together and the two boys started their families there. Joe later moved to Clifton, Texas on a farm there and Mary moved as well. Joe also owned a home and business in the town of Clifton, Texas.

James and Mary saw lots of changes in the territory that they moved to in the wild and wully unsettled territory of Texas. They survived Indian battles and raids upon their home and land up in the Palo Pinto area when they first came to Texas. There were very few people and very frightening times for them and undoubtly they were very stong and tough people that had the endurance to settle this territory and give us a good place to live and to reap the sacrifices they had to make for their family. Their hardships were indescribable.

Mary had a brother-in-law, Sam Savage, that as a child, was captured by Indians along with his brother and cousin in Parker County just outside of the town on Weatherford, Texas. His father and Uncle were killed while working in their fields. The children and the horses were stolen. The children lived with the Indians for about a year and were purchased by a trader that recognized them to be white children. He traded his prized horses and saddles to the Indians up in Okla. and returned the children to their parents.

Mary told her grandchildren about Indians all around and the raids that he Indians made on hers and James's home up in Palo Pinto County. She told about hiding in the attic while they circled their home one day while James was gone. They stole things, but luckily, they did not set the house on fire, so she survived to tell about it. She had so much history to tell her grandchildren. She was my great grandmother and I wish that I had known her. [6]
