  • Notes
    • The 1945 picture of Eugene with other Moffat and Estes family members at the old Cyrus Moffat homestead in Thomas, Oklahoma, was taken right after the war. In the photo Eugene was still in his sailor's uniform. He fought in the South Pacific during WWII. He was on the destroyer USS California for a while. Prior to that he was on a submarine called the USS Otis.

Notice in the photo that Eugene is almost bald. The Otis was depth charged by the Japanese and the ship was stuck under a reef for several days. The ship lost most of its oxygen. Consequently, everyone on board almost died. They all lost their hair. Eugene never got much of it back. He was 25 years old in the picture. He also landed the invasion in Leyte Golf. This is where Douglas MacArthur made his infamous speech "I shall return...". Eugene’s uncle, Frank Orville Moffat, was also in the Navy during the war.
    • Eugene William Moffat was an outstanding fly fisherman. He won a fishing tournament in Colorado in the late 1950s. He won a boat, motor, and fishing equipment.

My dad built earth filled hydro electric dams. So, we
were in Pakistan for 3 1/2 years, Greece for 3 years,
      etc.. [5]
