  • Notes
    • Born at Poplar Flats, Kentucky on February 25, 1824. He lived on his father's farm until in 1848 he started with a party by oxen to California. They came as far as Lewiston, Illinois when they lost all their possessions in a fire. In the spring they came by boat, reaching St. Paul, Minnesota on April 26, 1950.

The next day he went out to the H.R. Gibbs farm (near Larpenteur and Cleveland Avenues) where he broke new land with ox teams until fall when he sold his outfit and went back to Kentucky. He returned to St. Paul in the spring of 1851, when bought W.E. Bissel's land eleven miles east of St. Paul, sold it and cleared $500.

The next spring he took a claim at Silver Lake using a Military land warrant issued to his father as a veteran of the War of 1812. This land warrant was No. 25593 for land located at N.W. 1/4 N.E. 1/4 Sec. 14.28.22 Washington County, Minnesota. On April 26, 1852 the land was assigned to W.G. Hendrickson and on June 24, 1852 it was recorded at Ramsey County, Minnesota.

On July 21, 1852 with another warrant which he bought from a neighbor in Kentucky, he bought 40 acres of land in what is now St. Anthony Park. This land was subsequently sold and in 1950 a portion of this property (2267 Carter Ave., St. Paul, MN) was purchased by his great-grand daughter Janet Randall Quale and her husband LeRoy Quale.

In 1852 he purchased his homestead in Comodale from Benjamin F. Hoyt. On February 21, 1853 he married Melvine Moffet.

Son Eugene Alvin Hendrickson is born in 1854.
Son Albert Preston Hendrickson is born in 1855.
Son Ernest W.. Hendrickson is born in 1858.
Daughter Emma Laura Hendrickson is born in 1860.
Son George Lorenzo Hendrickson is born in 1863.
Daughter Minne May Hendrickson is born in 1865.

He was a member of the Territorial Pioneers and was one of the commission members that errected the court house and city hall in St Paul. He was a life member of the Minnesota State Agricultural Society.

He commissioned Alexis Jean Fournier to paint a picture of his house (Comodale) "so that the young man doesn't stave to death before he gets work." The painting is now in the possession of Laura Lyford Quale, his great-great-grand daughter.

When his family needed more room, he simply bought another house and move it to be connected to the original building. He was the most progressive and prosperous farmer in the area and "retired" in his forties to direct the affairs of the farm and family from his chair. His grand daughter Stella Elizabeth Lyford spoke of being in great awe of him because if anyone failed to comply with his wishes instantly, he would thump his heavy cane on the floor with the implied threat of worse.

1898 His wife, Melvine dies on September 14th.

1900 William dies at his home in St Paul, Minnesota. He is buried at Oakland Cemetery. The minister at his funeral described him as "one of nature's noblemen: a country gentleman of the old school."
