Notes |
- 1. "Benjamin Franklin Moffatt was seventeen years of age at the outbreak of the Black Hawk Indian war, and he served as a soldier during the period of that conflict, his widow having thereafter been granted a pension on this score. After living a number of years in Joe Davies County he returned to Peoria County and became the owner of a farm in Limestone Township, there he passed the remainder of his life. His wife whose maiden name was Nancy J. Risdon was born in Connecticut and her death occurred in 1853." - HISTORY OF ILLINOIS, 4V4, p50. 2. "Benjamin Franklin, born October 8, 1815, near Quebec, Canada; married (1) Nancy Jane Risdon; married (2) Mary Wayne, nee Rockwell; died March 17, 1886." - "Nine Inhabitants...", The Peoria Journal-Tribune, 30 Nov 1933. 3. "Moffatt, Benjamin F., wid Mercy, WC-2504 MO 3 Jan 1893, Black Hawk War srv IL Mtd Vols." - Index to Indian Wars Pension Files 1892-1926 Volume II: L-Z, Transcribed by Virgil D. White, p1074. This entry indicates that the soldier's name was Benjamin F. Moffatt, his widow was named Mercy, she received a Widow's Certificate #2504 on a claim filed in Missouri on 3 Jan 1893 for his service in the Black Hawk Indian War, he served with the Illinois Mounted Volunteers; (Note- Widow's name, Mercy, does not match wives names from 30 Nov 1933 Peoria Journal, 1)Nancy J. Risdon and 2)Mary Wayne Rockwell. Mercy could be a misinterpretation of a handwritten Mary in the original pension record.)
