  • Notes
    • Elizabeth (almost always called Lizzie) Moffat was the only daughter of Andrew and Agnes Moffat. She was born on 16 Aug 1889 probably in Hawick. She was married to John Miller of 10 Howegate. The wedding announcement in the Hawick paper said, ”Miller-Moffat-At the Manse, on the 30th ult., John Miller, painter and decorator, to Elizabeth, daughter of Andrew, gardener.”

Lizzie and John, who had no children of their own, brought up, but apparently did not adopt, Ella Turnbull, who came to them when she was eleven or twelve, and may have been a relative. Ella was married after WWII and went to live in Ireland. In 1975 Ann Haig Patterson said that Ella was last in Hawick for John Miller’s funeral. He was buried 29 April 1969, age 86, in the Burghal Section of Wellogate Cemtery. Lizzie, who
was buried on 22 June 1946, is buried in Lair. No.714 with him. [Source 935] [1]
