Obituary | James Thorington II Easton, James Thorington II of Easton, died at the Talbot Hospice House on Sunday, February 12, 2012, at the age of 84. He was born on October 13, 1927 in Philadelphia, PA. the son of Richard Wainwright Thorington, a well known Philadelphia attorney, and Louise Moffat Thorington. He was named for his grandfather, an internationally known eye surgeon who had previously served as doctor for the Panama Railroad Company during the time that Ferdinand deLessops was attempting to build the Panama Canal. Mr. Thorington grew up in Wynnewood, a suburb of Philadelphia and graduated from the Episcopal Academy in 1945. He then joined the United States army and served with the Army Air Corps. His overseas duty was with the 20th Air Force in the Mariannas Islands. He was a 1951 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania where he was on the wrestling team. While attending college, he worked two summers aboard a 50’ schooner owned by John G. Alden of Boston, a renowned naval architect. From this he developed a strong love for sailing, which activity he pursued for the rest of his life. He was a member of the Tred Avon Yacht Club of Oxford, Md. and Chesapeake Bay Yacht Club of Easton. He was a former member of the Corinthian Yacht Club of Philadelphia. During his business career, Mr. Thorington spent 25 years in the general insurance business, both as a broker and underwriter, specializing in marine insurance and reinsurance. He then transferred his business interest to several newly developing companies in the Philadelphia area; first with Streamlight, Inc., a manufacturer of high intensity, portable lights, and then with Compudata, Inc., a computer specialty company, from which he retired as a director in 1994. He also served for many years as a director of the Garrett-Williamson Foundation of Newtown Square, PA. a day care and learning center for underprivileged children. Ha was a longtime member of the Pennsylvania Society of Sons of the Revolution and was active with the General (national) Society for 30 years, serving six years as General Treasurer and three years as General President. In 1995, he served on the National Awards Jury at Freedoms Foundation, Valley Forge, PA. Following his move to the Eastern Shore he was a member of the Easter Shore Council of the Navy League and served as Secretary for several years. He was also a founding member and secretary of the Talbot Investors Group. Mr. Thorington is survived by his beloved wife, the former Frances Armitage Whitman, better known as Frankie, whom he married in 1988. He was previously married for 30 years to the former Anne Graham French of Philadelphia, which ended in divorce. A second marriage to Marilyn Jentz Enright of Devon, PA. in 1982 was terminated by her death from cancer four years later. He leaves four children from his first marriage, Nancy Thorington of Downingtown, PA. James Parker Thorington of Coatesville, PA. Deborah Graham Thorington also of Downingtown, PA., Milby Burton Thorington of East Fallowfield, PA., and six grandsons, Christopher F. Loomis, John J. Loomis, M. Brian Thorington, Peter W. Thorington, Graham F. Thorington and James R. Thorington. He is also survived by two sisters, Helen L. Thorington of Roslindale, MA., Florence T. Williams of Sanibel, FL., a brother, Dr. Richard W. Thorington of Bethesda, MD., and six step children, Michael Enright of Malvern, PA., Leslie Enright of Wayne, PA., Tracy Enright Patterson of Greensboro, N.C. Allen Whitman IV of Oakland, CA., Elizabeth W. Winder of Manchester, MA., and Cynthia W. Lawes of Malden, England. A memorial service will be held at 2:00PM on Friday, February 24, 2012 at Christ Episcopal Church, St. Michaels, MD. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Talbot Hospice Foundation 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD. 21601.
