  • Notes
    • William Walter "Bill" Kelley started out on his own by age 16, not by choice. We are not sure whether this is an Irish custom, or just his father's way. The boys of this family on their 16th birthday would find their clothes waiting for them on the porch and the house would be locked. This was a way to say, tis time for you to be on your own. This tradition did not carry down to the next generation.

"Bill" Kelley settled in Holstein, Ida Co., Iowa, in 1910, since having worked in the area since 1907 as a Singer in Dr Lindens Medicine Show. Bill was known by his family to sing Irish songs in German and to have an Irish twinkle of fun in his eyes.

In 1910 he took a job with Drews Drayline as drayman. A drayman hauls heavy loads with a special high boarded wagon pulled by horses. Since all freight had to come into Holstein by way of trains a good occupation was to be a drayman to make deliveries to all businesses in the community, you always had work. During this period, Holstein had two trains a day each way that ran between Wall Lake and Sioux City Iowa. After the streets of Holstein, Ida Co., Iowa, were paved in 1923 dray trucks were used.

The Holstein Advance Newspaper; Thursday, 11 Jul 1912; Wm. Kelley and Miss Marie Reimers left today noon for Carroll County where they will be married and after spending a few days with relatives they will return to Holstein to make their home. Mr. Kelley has been engaged in the dray business and Miss Reimers is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Claus Reimers. The many friends of these young people will join in wishing happiness and prosperity.

After his marriage to Marie Reimers, Marie's father owned a restaurant and bar, where Marie cooked in the restaurant and Bill worked in the Reimers family restaurant and bar as needed. "Bill" also worked at Morning Side Oil (Gas Station and Repair Shop) owned by August Hermakie in Holstein, Ida Co., Iowa.

"Bill" and Marie in 1939 moved to Mapleton, Monona Co., Iowa, lived in Mapleton one year. In Mapleton, "Bill" worked at the Chevy garage and Marie cook in the local restaurant.

They moved to Omaha, Douglas Co., Nebraska and lived there until July 1946. While in Omaha, Marie ran the boarding house at 38th & Farnam St., and "Bill" worked-----. In 1946 they were living at 54th & Corby, and given free board and room for running their apartment house they moved to Huntington Park, Los Angeles Co., California July 1946.

"Bill" and Marie lived in Huntington Park, Bell, Arcadia, Hollydale and other Los Angeles Co., California suburbs. Last known residence was South Gate, Los Angeles Co., California.
