  • Notes
    • Marie "Mary" (Reimers) Kelley was from a hearty German heritage, with a strong work ethic. As many children in the farm area of Iowa, Marie and her sister Anna were taken out of school at the 3rd grade, to work at home, the farm and in the Reimers family restaurant. Marie did not receive a formal education. Marie was a fast learner and gained as much knowledge in this life as possible.

Marie was the first girl in Holstein, Ida Co., Iowa, to bob her hair. As she stated it caused a real uproar, "the people in Holstein called me a trollop" but soon after, the people who hollered the loudest were the first ones to follow suit and bob their hair, so the uproar did not last long.

Marie always keeped a coffee pot on, just in case someone might stop by. Marie cooked the meals plus was known to bake up to a 100 fresh pies a day at the Reimers family restaurant.

At Thanksgiving and Christmas, Marie would invite the railroad roundhouse for those holidays or whenever the could stop by. When the train would stop in Holstein, the trainmen would leave the train and look up Marie and family. If they did not find her at the restuarant they would look for her at home, passengers would have to wait. Anyone who stopped by could expect fresh pie, homebaked bread with fresh sweet butter, a cup of coffee and warm smile to let you know that you were always welcome.

Her son Warren stated that he knew when his brother's, were to be born. He would be sent uptown to a movie. On Warren's arrival home, there would be celebrating and Mother would be up serving coffee and food.

Marie enjoyed sewing, quilting, and doing many crafts.
