- Elected Captain, Company C, 3rd SC Infantry 14 Apr 1861. Served throughout the war and saw action at Savage Station, Fredrickburg, Chancellorsville. He was commander of the 3rd SC in the Wheat Field on the 2nd day at Gettyburg. He was wounded several times and survived thyphoid fever. On 6 May, 1864 he became Lt. Col. On 26 Aug 1864 he was captured in the Shennendoah Valley. He died of dysentery in Ft. Delaware Military Prison a few days after the surrender at Appomatox. He was buried in a mass grave.
