      Mrs. Eleanor Sullivan Appleton
      GORHAM - Mrs. Eleanor Sullivan Appleton, 84, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, in the home she loved that was built by her grandfather, Alna Libby.
      Born Aug. 2, 1916, in ArIington, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Charles E. and Marion (Libby) Sullivan.
      After graduating from Newton (Mass.) High School in 1933, she graduated from Colby Junior College in 1936 and Katherine Gibbs School in 1936. On Oct. 2, 1937, she was married to Francis M. Appleton, MD. She served as a director and vice president- of the Mount Washington Auto Road and the Glen and Mount Washington Stage Company. She was also a director of the E. Libby and Sons Company, now known as the Gorham Land Company.
      She was a past president of the Gorham Woman's Club and a member of the St. Louis-Androscoggin Valley Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed skiing, golf, travel, reading and spending time with family and friends.
      Surviving are four children, Merrily Brown of White River junction, Vermont, Susan Walker of Montpelier, Vermont, Samuel Appleton of Camden, Maine, and Deborah Appleton of Gorham; a nephew, Scott Philbrook of Milford; 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
      She was predeceased by her husband in 1992 and by a sister, Jean Philbrook, in 1966.
      A memorial service will be held at 11a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, at the Gorham Congregational Church. Interment will be in the Dublin (NH) Town Cemetery.
      There will be no calling hours.
      In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Androscoggin ValIey Home Health and Hospice, 59 Page Hill Road, Berlin, NH 03570.
      The Bryant Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
