    • Like his father and mother, Bill spent a year abroad in his youth at Paris and Grenoble receiving a French education. Attended Newton Country Day School, Milton Academy, and Harvard, Class of 1930 (but dropped out in 1928). Worked in management at the Faulkner & Colony Mills in Keene, N.H. from 1933 until the late '30s, living at a house in Sullivan later to become the Apple Hill summer camp and still later a music colony. Then operated the Appleton family farm in Dublin until 1949. Went back to college in 1949 at age 42 at the Univ. of N.H., receiving his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1952. Worked as a technical writer for Esso in Cranford, N.J. (1953-1961) and for Humble Oil (Exxon) in Houston, Texas (1961-1967) when the corporate offices moved there. His hobby was "hobbies" which included home movie photography, playing and writing for the accordion and piano, sailing, fencing, skiing and travel.
