A. Faulkner remembers that he and his father W. E. Faulkner, Jr. visited "Uncle Howard" in Morristown, N.J. in about 1955 when he was about 10 on a day trip from Cranford. The Foxes had a very clever dog who would bark in response to questions, and could read the slightest gesture you would make unselfconsciously, so that like the horse "Clever Hans," he appeared to be able to read your mind, doing the most complex math problems-that is if YO U knew the answer. Helen Sarr confirmed my recollection of this dog. I'm afraid I paid too little attention to Howard, and too much to the dog.
Update: I spoke on January 6, 2006 to Howard’s daughter, Jane Fox Liepe [pronounced “Lippy”] and she verified that this was her dog, a registered shelty named “Wee Wendy of the Poconos.” Howard Fox was staying with the Lippes en route to his place in Florida. Obviously I must have met Jane Fox Liepe at that time but I have no recollection of her. In any case, on the same trip my father and I also visited a museum in Morristown that had a uniform supposedly worn by George Washington.
