Notes |
- John brown was actually a journeyman apprentice to Thomas Tait, but by all accounts was treated as an adopted son, and was brought with the family to America.
“Grandfather adopted (?) John Brown, a young man in his teens, from some charitable institution about seven years after his marriage. John helped in the shop and was treated like a son--going to school...
“John Brown ran away with $100 Grandfather was saving to come to America--came back and was forgiven and brought to this country...
“John Brown was helping in the sugar bush [in PA] making sugar troughs. When Grandfather passed near him his axe slipped, hitting Grandfather on the right hip. They carried him home on the stone boat and called the doctor (Dr. Peckham).”
