  • Notes
    • At the tender aged of 14 John was supposed to have been thrown out of his father’s house because he was a socialist and in fact, the woman he married, Jemima Smith was also a socialist. She was about 11 years older than him. He and Jeanie Smith were married in the United Free Church in Dundee 11 December 1908. Both living at 41 Victoria Street, Dundee. His age was listed as 23 it was really 20 and Jeanie was listed as 26. If the records I have found are the right ones then she was 31!! and her name was really Jane Ann Smith. She is listed as Jane on Arthurs birth certificate but Jean and Jeanie on her marriage and death certificates.

Their witnesses were Robert Moffat, John's brother and Annie Laurie (Larew).

John worked at John Browns shipyard until his retirement. He told his daughter in law, Ivy, that he had only been kept in work by the unions and because he was a lefthanded riveter. I think he might have been pulling her leg with that last bit. He apparently had quite a dry if sometimes wicked sense of humour but was very well liked and respected.

He and Arthur, his youngest son lived in one room in a tenement above the post office in Chalmers Street, Clydebank. It had a really large room but this was empty with bare floor boards. They slept in a double bed together, which was in an alcove, in this one room that also served as a kitchen and living room. The toilet was just about inside and it still had gas lighting as late as 1969. Arthur remained in the tenement until his own death in 1971.

John's brother, Robert, emigrated to America. He was supposed to have returned to Glasgow for a short time whilst the dust settled after he was in a shoot out in a bar. Again this is family myth and is unlikely to be correct. [1]
