      Driver dies in area crash
A rural Lewiston girl missing since Monday afternoon was found early Tuesday in her submerged car at a Wee-Ma-Tuk Hills lake. Sheriff's officials said Janet R. Burch, 18, had visited friends in the immediate area on Monday and had left for home about 4:30 p.m.
When she did not arrive home, her parents notified the Fulton County Sheriff's Department and she was listed as a missing person.
A relative who began re-tracing the girl's path to home discovered apparent car tracks leading into weeds off a gravel road and notified authorities at about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. The vehicle was found in about 18 feet of water just off of Cheyenne Drive at Wee-Ma-Tuk.
Officials called on divers of the Canton Fire and Rescue Squad to connect cables to the station wagon so it could be pulled from the lake by wrecker. Burch was pronounced dead at the scene by Fulton County Coroner Jim Keefauver.
Officials said Burch's car careened into the lake after she failed to negotiate a curve in the gravel road. She had received her driver's license Aug. 3. The roof of the vehicle was dented and officials are investigating further to determine if the car flipped over into the water.
Keefauver said Burch died from injuries received in the accident and not from drowning.
Janet R. Burch was born June 25, 1970, in Springfield, the daughter of Dr. Harry E. and Clara (Norris) Burch.
Survivors include her parents of rural Lewistown; three brothers, Dr. James Burch, Thomas Burch and Don Burch, all of Lewistown; one sister, Juanita Dennis of Camp Point; two nephews; and her grandmother, Beatrice Norris
      of Springfield.
She was a 1988 graduate of the Lewistown Community High School where she had been a member of the Spanish National Honor Society. She was enrolled as a freshman at Spoon River College.
She was also a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church at
      Lewistown.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at her church, the Rev. Robert O'Connor officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Henry Memorial Home at Lewistown where the rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.
Memorials may be made to a scholarship fund to be established in her name at Lewistown Community High School for a Spanish Club member.
