Surgeons, 1879. Practicing as Veterinary Surgeon in general practice. in 1888 invented, patented and put on the market an appliance for breeding mares. Author of book on Barren Mares. Articles: Operations on Corns and Contracted Feet; Fleming's Vet. Journal. Published in London, Aug., 1879, article on Castration of Cryptorchides; Differential Diagnosis between Furunaelus and Farcy, 1902; Radical Operation for Bursal Enlargements, Am. Vet. Rev. 1901; Report of Colleges and Education, Am. Vet. Rev., 1903. Cystic Tumors of Pelvic Cavities, 1904, and others. Am. Veterinary Medical Ass'n; Minn. State Vet. Med.       1853 Charles was born August 21st to Thomas Lyford and Eliza Burns Lyford (nee Greeley) in Winnebago, Roscoe, Illinois. He was named after Charles F. Chamberlain who married Mary Greeley, a favorite cousin of the family.
      1858 His father dies in a farming accident when Charles is 5 years old.
      1871-75 Attends the state university in Champain, Illinois with a B.S.
      1877 Graduates from Montreal Veterinary College with a D.V.S.
      1879 Graduates from McGill Medical College with a M.D.
      He visited Lyford relatives in Canterbury, New Hampshire and Greeley relatives in Winchester and Boston before his interest in selective breeding and sex determination prior to conception brought him to further study in London, England.

      1879 Goes to London, England for 3 months to attend the Royal Veterinary College.
      For some reason never mentioned but which certainly be guessed, he returned from his tudies a young man who distructed women and disliked the French and perfumes. He considered most people to be "mongrels" and refused to devote his life treating them. "You know the breeding of a horse, and you can depend on that animal to be true to his breeding."

      1879 Secures lifetime membership in the Minnesota State Agricultural Society.
      1880 Moves to Minneapolis, Minnesota on February 28th and buys a lot of buildings at 309 2nd Ave. S. February 29th he starts practicing Veterinary medicine.
      1880-90 Is the city veterinarian.
      1883-89 Is President of Northwestern Veterinary College. He is also founder of the college.
      1885 Married Emma Laura Hendrickson December 23rd in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota.
      1886 Daughter Stella Elizabeth Lyford is born.
      1888 Son Dartt Hendrickson Lyford is born.
      1888 Invents, patents and markets an appliance for breeding mares.
      1889 Son Kenneth Lyford is born.
      1889 Northwestern Veterinary College is burned down by a disgruntled stable boy. The Fire consumes the college, offices, stables and horses, including a very expensive stallion he had just bought to stud, but hadn't insured or completely paid for. His loss came to 6 times his insurance coverage.
      1891 Writes and publishes book "Barren Mares". Published in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Printed by Moffett and Thurston.
      1897 Son Chester Dudley Lyford is born.
      1897 Charles, Dr Richard Price and Myron Herbert Reynolds met on January 18th with the purpose of starting a state veterinary organization. The Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association still exists today.
      1901 Attends the fall meeting of the American Medical Veterinary Association at Atlantic City and is elected one of the vice presidents.
      1902 Elected president at the state association of the American Medical Veterinary Association.
      1922 Emma leaves her husband, unaware that his behavior was caused by a brain tumor.
      1925 Charles dies of a brain tumor. [5]
