- Life and times of David Moffat Surgeon 3rd Ceylon Regt.
David began his medical studies at the age of 16. Sadly there are no records of his graduation. (There are no personal records of 18th century students in existence and only brief addresses for early 19th century ones).
David passed anatomy, Surgery and Clinical studies at Edinburgh University in 1797 and 1798 and was passed by the Company of Surgeons (the immediate predecessor 1745-1799) of the existing Royal College of Surgeons of England as a Surgeon Second Mate to a second rate ship on 7 January 1798 and later first mate.
At the age of 37 David held a passport signed by him issued by the French Ambassador in London on 3 June 1818. In the passport he is described as being 37 years of age ( born 1781) a native of Dalkeith with brown hair, eyes and eyerows, a coloured complexion an ordinary nose and tanned face. His height is given as 70cm, which perhaps should be 170cm!).
He travelled from London to Calais and visited Paris and Brussels and Gant (Gent) in Belgium but it is not known for what reasons. (P 20 Donald William Moffat's book Moffat from Ancient Scottish days Dec 1985).
His brother Thomas wrote to David in 1798 advising him against joing the army where he says such a depravity of morals universally prevails as bears all before it like a desolating torrent which one in a thousand does not stem. Strong words!!
Thomas again wrote to David in September 1798 when he was on board HMS Adamant at Portsmouth (in England) that the Triumph (Thomas's ship was then off Cape Clear where Thomas expected to cruise for a very long time.
Letters written by a Sir john Buchan in 1832 and 1833 establish that David Moffat and his family where living on the Isle of Man and had been there for sometime. The first was addressed to Douglas the capital of the Isle of Man and the second to Crosby which is half a mile from Marown on the Isle of Man. It must also be noted that Eliza Moffat (David and Allisons last child was born in Malew on the Isle in 1836.
In 1832 David was handling the local affairs of Sir John Buchan.
In 1833 he was acting as agent for the late Mark Wilks and by 1836 he was running the school at Eyreton Farm. Opened in 1834 it was called Christ Church School and it was for the education of young men and conducted on exclusively Christian principles. David seems to have run the school until his death at Eyreton Farm in 1844 aged 63.
He also seems to have had a 'surgery' south side of Douglas Bridge according to a notice in the Manx Sun on 5 May 1833 ie to be sold at Kirby the stock of wines belonging to the Late Col Wilkes. For particulars apply to Dr Moffatt at his house, south side of Douglas Bridge".
Davids family tomb is located in the grave yard of St Runius (the old Parish Church of Marown, Isle of Man) which has been there since 1200ad. Written on the lid is the following:
Sacred to the memory of David Moffat, Surgeon of the late 3rd Ceylon Regt. Born at Dalkeith near Edinburgh on 1 June 1787, died at Eyreton (farm) in this parish on the 16 July 1844 aged 63 years. Also Eliza Alison daughter of the above, born at Crosby in this parish 5 February 1836, died at Crosby on the 1 April 1837 aged 18 months.
Also Thomas Peter Moffat, son of the above, died the 6 May 1864, aged 30 years.
David and Allison's Will was signed on the 22 day april 1837. At that date their only surviving children were David, Helen, and William. On David's death Allison became the executor of their joint will.
Information found on a visit to the Isle of Man and available in the library there and in the church yard of St Runius
Peter Moffat seems to have been quite well off as three of the boys went to medical school in Edinburgh. David, Thomas and John all studied there and all went to sea at some stage in their lives.
