FAIR OAKS, Calif. — James "Jim" Halford Mafit, of Fair Oaks Calif., previously of Carlsbad, passed away on July 7, 2007, at Sunrise of Fair Oaks Senior Living Facility in Fair Oaks, Calif., (Sacramento) at age 83, of age-related causes. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jeraldine "Jerry" Perkowski Mafit on Aug. 25, 2005, at age 81, of lung cancer, also of Fair Oaks. The family has arranged a short memorial service for the burial of ashes of Jim and Jerry together at Sunset Gardens Cremation Memorial Park, 1406 E. Wood Ave., at 2 p.m. Sunday. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of life after the service at 4 p.m. at the home of Gary and Dorothy Perkowski, 1710 Loretta Lane, in Carlsbad. James was born June 19, 1924, in Kalamazoo, Mich., to Trowbridge and Thiel Haugh Mafit. He spent his early childhood in Michigan before moving to Albuquerque, where he graduated from Albuquerque High School. Jim joined the U.S. Navy and served on active duty in the South Pacific in 1944-1945 during World War II. He met his future wife, Jeraldine (Jerry), while on leave and they were married in 1944. After his discharge from the Navy, he completed a degree in Architectural Engineering at the University of Houston in 1951. He was employed at Sandia Corporation (now Sandia National Laboratories) in both Albuquerque and Livermore, Calif.; with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in Los Alamos; and with the University of California, first at Los Alamos, and later at the UC Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory in Berkeley, Calif. He was awarded professional certification as a plant engineer (CPE) from the American Institute of Plant Engineering in 1979. He also spent several years in the early 1980s with Holmes & Narver in Jubal and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, before fully retiring in 1984 to a condominium in Folsom, Calif. In 1989, complications from surgery for a brain aneurysm left him with global aphasia. He moved to Carlsbad with his wife Jerry in 2002, but returned to the Sacramento area in 2005 after Jerry was diagnosed with cancer.

Jeraldine (Perkowski) of Fair Oaks, Calif., previously of Carlsbad, died Aug. 25, 2005, of lung cancer. She was 81. She was born on May 17, 1924, in Hiawatha, Utah, to Sam and (Christi) Ana Jensen Perkowski. She was the only girl amongst five brothers, and spent her early childhood in Carlsbad, and graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1938. After graduation, she joined the U.S. Navy and served during WWII as a nurse. She met her future husband Jim while on leave and they were married in 1944. Between 1946 and 1980, Jerry was a homemaker/stay-at-home mom who raised five children and supported Jim. She journeyed to Saudi Arabia twice to join Jim as a dependent when he took an overseas contract. After Jim's accident, Jerry became his primary caregiver with all the difficulties that presented. She moved them to Carlsbad in the hopes of providing additional opportunities while surrounded by family and friends. They returned to the Sacramento area after she was diagnosed with cancer. Jim and Jerry were preceded in death by: a son, Ronald Delmont, their parents, and his brothers, Trowbridge R. "Ted" and John D. "Jack," and a sister, Mary Lou, who died as a young child; and her brothers, Earl, Fred and Jack. Jim and Jerry are survived by: son, Randy and daughter-in-law, Dana of Eugene, Ore.; daughter, Robi and son-in-law, Ray Cornelius of Fair Oaks, Calif.; Robi's son, Tory Brown of Citrus Heights, Calif.; son, Richard of Salem, Ore.; Richard's sons, Dillon of Salem, Ore., and Duncan of Santa Rosa, Calif.; daughter, Rebecca Haggerson of Fair Oaks, Calif., and Rebecca's daughter, Whitney of Tempe, Ariz.; and Jerry's brothers, Walter and James Robert.  [2
