  • Notes
    • Line V in the William & Barbara Chestnut Moffatt history by J.R. Moffatt His birth date has also been reported as 1787. Family Bible lists death date as 14 Apr 1851

Died at his residence in Chester District, S.C. at 4 o'clock on the 10th day of April, 1851, William Moffatt, in the 65th year of his age. ...(early member of) Hopewell, Chester District, but removed some thirty-five years since to Union congregation. (Obit).

James S. Moffatt wrote of his uncle in 1888, "William Moffatt, who was a merchant, already considered a rich man, took me to clerk for him. He was strictly honest in all his dealings, was called by some close and pecuniary. I lived with him for five years and never knew him to take anything not his own. He was liberal to a fault toward the poor and distressed. He and his wife raised a good many young men of their kinfolk, who profited by their example and became useful to themselves and to society."
