- There are no marrage records extant in the old parochial registers of Kirkmichael for John and Margaret Craig. We thought it possible that Agnes might have originally been christened Amelia, but an Amelia Moffat, married to John Burgess, recorded a child in Corses in 1845, and continued to record children until the birth of a daughter, Amelia Jane Burgess in Dryfesdale in 1862. The following entry was also noted in the old parochial register of Kirkmichael. March 18 1815 Baptised lawful daughter of John Moffat and Agnes Beck in Townhead. Two other children were recorded to this couple in Moffat, John Moffat's place of birth. Nov 18 1810 John Moffat shoemaker in Moffat and Agnes Beck had a son baptd called Edward. James Moffat baptised 17 April, 1814. We think that this was probably a first wife of "our" John Moffat. There was no trace found of the marriage of Agnes Beck and John Moffat in the old parochial registers of Moffat 1805 - 1810 - but these records are very patchy- there are no death records in the old parochial registers of Kirkmichael, so we cannot confirm the death of Agnes Beck. Search for the birth of John Moffat No trace could be found of his birth, or of any brothers and sisters in the old parochial registers of Moffat 1780-1798. The registers of Moffat are blank October 1776 to January 1779, and defective 1783 to 1791. This last is probably because a tax of 3 pence per entry was imposed by the government from 1783 to 1794, which discouraged many parents who might otherwise have used the registers. [1]
