  James W.(Washington) Moffitt was born in Randolph County, NC on August 22, 1852. He married in Union Township, Union County, IA on April 12, 1885, to Emma Cora Craig, born 1869, Union Co, IA, daughter of W.F. Craig, county auditor. James was raised on the family homestead and went to the common schools. He worked on the farm helping his father until he was 22 years old when he moved to Afton and worked for 4 years for an implement company. He then learned carpentry, working at that for 2 years. He returned farming in Section 1 having purchased 160 acres of land, which he improved and cultivated then sold and bought 60 acres on Section 12 Union township. He later added 40 acres in Section 11. Here he built his home, barns, raised stock and specialized in Chester White hogs. He was township assessor for 2 terms, president of the township school board for 12 years, and road supervisor for 11 years. He went to the Christian Church of Pleasant Ridge. [2]
