  • Notes
    • Helen Youtzy White recalls that Lemuel died in the “County Home”. He was, perhaps, in the poor house.

05/29/2000: Sarah Berneice Harman Armstrong remembers that Lemuel was married late in life. He then ended life in an institution. His wife died in a fire, and he lived in Illinois and Iowa.
Lemuel lived with Cyrus Moffat when Sarah Berneice was in 5th grade. [8]

      LYNNWOOD CEMETERY

The Lynnwood Cemetery can be found in section 13 of Jackson Township on the west edge of Clarksville. In 1883, the city fathers had the land surveyed and established the cemetery. The cemetery contained an area of forty-three acres and was purchased from Lewis Slimmer for the sum of $1,000.00. It is owned and operated by the city and has had excellent care through the years. Prominent features at the cemetery include the Perrin oblish and Root-Slimmer mausoleum in the center of the original cemetery.

The first person buried in these grounds was Daniel, a son of Dr. A.F. Tichenor on April 3,1878. His death occurred before the grounds were platted.

Section A in the northwest corner is divided into north (Ano), center (Ace) and south (Aso). The Mausoleum, M, has graves on the east side, Me, and west side, Mw. The Memorial part of the cemetery which lies to the east, is divided into three sections: Ma, Mb (babyland) and Mc.

      1929

The obituary of Lemuel Moffatt, who passed away at the county home last Wednesday follows:

Lemuel Moffatt was born near Amboy, Illinois, March 8, 1855, and died on April 10, 1929, aged 74 years, 1 month, and 2 days. He was married in 1880 to Evaline Heickman and about thirty-five years ago came to Iowa, where for several years, he farmed in Jackson Township. After the death of his wife in 1904 he went to Nebraska and later to Oklahoma. He was a heavy man and his limbs becoming disabled he gave up farming, for a while he kept a grocery store in Cedar Rapids. Thirteen years ago he returned to Butler county and being no longer able to work he sought admission to the county home on September 20, 1916, where he was well cared for until the time of his death. Of his ten brothers and sisters only three survive, Mrs. Eliza Youtzy, of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Susan Cunningham, of Erie, Illinois, and Cyrus Moffatt, of Curtis, Nebraska, George Feltus and Frank Neal of Allison, nephews, are the only relatives now living in this vicinity. Mr. Moffatt was a generous, friendly man, retaining an interest in his fellows and in world affairs until very recently.

About February 1st, gangrene developed in his left foot which soon brought on his end. His funeral was held at the Jungkunz undertaking rooms at 2 p.m., April 11, with Rev. O.B. Preston in charge. Interment took place in his family lot in Lynwood cemetery, Clarksville, beside his wife and sister, Mary Greenan.
