- Orillia Expositor, 21 January 1873 --- DEATH OF AN OLD RESIDENT ---
Death has removed an unusually [sic. large] number of the old settlers in this as well as other parts of the Province during the past year. This week we are called upon to record the demise of one of the oldest and most favourably known residents of Orillia, Andrew Moffatt, Esq., who came here from the county of Fermanagh, Ireland, thirty four years ago. As a merchant, he accumulated a competency; as a Magistrate, he was active and respected. He leaves several sons and daughters, nearly all of whom are comfortably settled in life --- the eldest our former respected and enterprising fellow-townsman, Thomas S. Moffatt, Esq., of Minnesota. Andrew Moffatt, the Indian teacher and interpreter, was appointed a justice of the peace in 1843, and was a resident from the time of his arrival early in the thirties until his death in 1873. His wife was a Miss Manwaring, a native of Connecticut, who came to Orillia also as a teacher of the Indians in 1832, and was married to Mr. Moffatt in 1834. They continued teaching the Indians until the removal of the band to Rama five years later, after which Mr. Moffatt went into business in Orillia. She survived her husband until October 12, 1891, passing away at the advanced age of 82 years. [1]
- A reprint of an old 1867 Orilia gazetteer and directory gives some insightful early history of the area including the idea that in 1835 there were only six white families in the whole town one being Andrew Moffatt. [1]
- The only published record found is the hand copy of the burial register for the cemetery of St Andrew
and St. James which verifies that many of his family members are buried there with it verifying that Andrew did die 21 Jan 1873. [1]
