  • Notes
    • In Marble, N.C. abt. 1933 my g.mother went to vote for the first time, what I am about to relate, I feel, happened to her because she looked so much like her indian ancestor's...they had to vote at the general merchandise store, Marble was a very small community, the registrar asked her if she could read and write, she said yes, he apparently did not believe her as he proceeded to throw an open book down in front of her and told her that she had to be able to read the constitution of the United States of America before she could vote, so she, as my mom put it, "tore in to reading that book" and when he said o.k. you can stop now, she replied dilegently "no sir,you asked me to read this and I'm not finished yet, and continued to read until she had read it entirely, at which time he said " o.k., you can vote"...I can just picture her standing there reading, I find it hard to imagine that anyone could have doubted her knowing her the way I do, but then given the indian heritage now I understand...Ironically, at the time she did not know of her indian heritage for sure, only a hint here and there,so even though she still had a good quantum of blood, she voted with indian blood BEFORE it was legal for her to do so!!!
I hope Andrew Jackson rolled over in his grave several time's!!!!!
