  • Notes
    • From the Parish Records Smailholm, "08 May 1853. Charles Moffat, Old Mainberry, and Margaret Watson, his wife, had a son born 03 April and baptized 08 May 1853 called Andrew." Nothing is known of his youth. He is not listed in his parents' household in the 1871 Census by which time he was 18. He is not listed in his parents' household at 13 Oliver Cres, Hawick, in the 1881 Census either, but Andrew's address on his oldest son's birth certificate in 1885 is #13 Oliver. It is likely that he was a laborer all his life.

Certainly for nearly fifty years he was a gardener at a big house or small castle called Balcary in Hawick. In 1975 Ann Haig Patterson, who was a niece of Agnes and Charles Moffat told me that "Balcary once belonged to a hosiery manufacturer (Patrick Anderson Laing), during the war it was an orphanage and now it is empty and derelict." We saw Balcary in 1984 when it was occupied by some kind of religious group. [Source 935] [2]
