“I never saw the picture you spoke about. But I remember that because Arthur presented Alice with a ‘God-awful’ pincushion which your great grandmother made; and did it without an apology, Alice decided ‘yes’ she would like to be ‘Mrs. A.T. Appleton.’”

  • Notes
    • Alice by her own account was a tomboy. Her father called her “Jimmy” because she did more work than her brothers and the hired hand. She helped in haying, and rode on the roller in planting time, picking up the stones that were too big to be left in the field. She was her younger brother Howard’s protectress, and saved his life twice; once when he cut his arm trying cut of a lead to a cow that his father had tied to him, and another time when he fell through the ice on a pond.

Comments from Agnes Fox Colegrove on the proposal of Arthur to her sister Alice in a letter to Lois (Appleton) Faulkner, April 25, 1973.

“I never saw the picture you spoke about. But I remember that because Arthur presented Alice with a ‘God-awful’ pincushion which your great grandmother made; and did it without an apology, Alice decided ‘yes’ she would like to be ‘Mrs. A.T. Appleton.’”

When Alice and Arthur were first married, they lived at Appleton farm. But there were three older women at the farm, Arthur’s grandmother Abbie S. Appleton, Mother Lillian G. Appleton, and a long term boarder Mary Ellen Frost. With Alice, this was surely too many cooks under one roof. Alice was the only outsider, being from Bradford, PA, and after 1910, when their second child was born, they moved down the road to the “White House.”
