Information provided by Agnes Margaret Colegrove Fraser in 1989.
Parents: Thomas Tait and Elizabeth Moffatt
[Adapted by Alaric Faulkner from reminiscences of Lizzie Tait Gallaher, Notes of Stella Fox Beam]
Agnes was the first one married. Truman Snyder was home from the army [Civil War, Private Company: B Unit: 13th Pennsylvania Res. Inf., 1st US Cavalry] on furlough and they were married. He had always admired her from the time they lived in Kendall Creek [SE Bradford, PA] as little children.
Agnes was engaged to George Stockweather who boarded with Uncle Sandy. He had come to be married and all was ready and he did not show up. Mrs. Buck Foster had taken him to see her niece at Smethport [SE of Bradford PA] and he later married someone else.
Agnes was terribly disappointed and a year later married Truman at the insistence of all his relatives. He was not going back till she did marry him--she was only 18.
He had enlisted in the regular army to get a furlough and when the war closed he was sent west to fight the Indians for a year or two. Agnes lived at home.
When he came home her father Thomas Tait made a shoemaker shop above the blacksmith shop and set him up in business. Later he went to Limestone [NY] and worked at his trade. Agnes sewed on buttons. He was a fine shoemaker but did not stick to his trade.
Finally went to Oil City--drilling--good driller. Agnes worked at dressmaking there. Children were born--Fanny a year--Monte six weeks and twins at birth-but all died.
Roy was born in Millerstown, Pennsylvania. They struck oil here and Truman came back to help Grandfather drill his first well--near the line by the present children's home.
See entry under Truman Snyder.
