    • JANE ANN Moffat nee Smith 1882

Born 25 Apr 1877 at 6 am, 52 Rosebank St, Dundee and registered by father William Smith

It looks like Jane Ann, known as Jeannie, was 11 years older than her husband, John Moffat. However, on her marriage certificate she is stated as being Jeanie aged 26 and John as 23. John was only 21 and she would have been 31. Her death certificate calls her Jean and her age as 53 when she must have been 60. Apart from the birth certificate all other certificates rely on what the registrar is told and obviously no proof was required. Parents are mentioned on both marriage and death certificates in Scotland so it is reasonable to suppose that both she and John lied about the age difference.

Her husband John Moffat called her Jeanie, her name on her son Arthur's birth certificate is Jane but Jean on her marriage and death certificates. However, I can only find a Jane Ann born to a William Smith and Jemima Ross, the parents named on her marriage and death certificates. Robert Moffat and Annie Laurie or Larew were the witnesses to her wedding to John Moffat.

She was a tailoress by trade but spent most of her time fighting causes. She played quite a prominent role in Glasgow with regard to the Daily Mail boots for poor people. Apparently they had to form queues for these boots and of course, this was embarassing and degrading so it was arranged for them to have coupons to take to shoe shops instead.

She had apparently had an operation in her 40’s where a swab had been left inside her and she became addicted to chloroform which she used as a painkiller. She died of a cerebral haemorage on 2 Jan 1937 at 10.05 pm at 50 Townend Road of a cerebral haemorage. Informant was her husband John Moffat. Legend has it that she was playing the piano for the other patients on New Years Eve. [1]
