Notes |
- John Moffat son of Peter Moffat of Dalkeith Midlothian Scotland
IN 1797 in a letter written by his brother Thomas Moffat to his father Peter Moffat he refers to John being in Torbay Naval Training Depot.
John it seems lef home and wrote to Thomas (undated) saying I'm sorry for leaving you in such clanestine manner...we are bound for the Cape, from there to Madras....write to my father and tell him not to be uneasy about me....
In a letter form Thomas to David it seems John's worst trait was borrowing money from every person who would lend it to him, no matter how much it was and leaving Thomas to find out about it and then settle the debts.
Peter Moffat seems to have been quite well off as three of the boys went to medical school in Edinburgh. David, Thomas and John all studied there and all went to sea at some stage in their lives. [2]
