Notes |
- Continued residency at Midknock farm as did his descendants for the next 300 years as tenants of the Dukes of Buccleuch. The Aberdeen Journal of 28 Sep 1904 reported that the pastoral farm of Mid Knock, in the Duke of Buccleuch's Eskdale Estate and situated in the parish of Westerkirk, Dumfriesshire, "at present tenanted by Mr. Robert E. Moffat, J.P. has been let at the present rate to Mr. Thomas Elliot, Greenrigg, Canonbie. This ends one of the very oldest tenancies in the whole of the Border counties. In 1300 or 1302 King Robert the Bruce granted to Thomas Moffat the lands of Knock.." Records of births and deaths of the Moffats of Knock after 1601 were lost, but pick up again in 1685 with the birth of Thomas Moffat, who married Janet Irving, and his brother James Moffat, born in 1688, who married Helen Brown. Records of the Moffats of Moffats of Ericstane begin anew in 1721 with the birth of James Moffat, who married Catherine Dalgleish.
