  • Notes
    • Grandson Robert William Moffatt remembers "Grandpa Oliver had a wooden leg with a hinge that he never oiled. You could hear him coming for miles." - "Interview with R.W.Moffatt," June 1992, , Germany. Oliver lost his leg in 1929 when a drunken driver hit a wheel barrow he was using for coal deliveries pinning his leg between the barrow and the steel wheeled coal wagon. He probably never felt a thing since he usually nipped at grandma Birtha's homemade beer. He preferred to tell the grandchildren that a beer wagon ran over him. Oliver worked: Not accepted for WWI service because he was too old, he worked in Peoria until 1927; 1927-1929 Forest Park, IL unloading coal cars & delivering coal. 1929-1943 unemployed & kids took care of the family. 1943-1945 ground lenses in a binocular factory. Spent 1-2 years in jail for assault & battery around 1909-1911. Born on St. Patrick's day, (Son William Christian says "that's a good day for an Irishman to be born"), Oliver died in Peoria, IL of a blood clot in the heart. He is buried in Peoria, IL. - "Interview with William Christian and Robert William Moffatt," James Anthony Moffatt, interviewer, 26 Dec 1992, Neosho, MO.
