- Thomas W Moffat son of Peter Moffat of Dalkeith
Thomas W Moffat reference (AFN:1NMS-6SN was born about 1785 in Dalkeith Scotland.
He became an Officer and a surgeon in the Ryal Navy after having passed Anatomy and Surgery at Edinburgh University in 1789 and 1790 just after his elder brother David. He passed like David as a Second Mate to a Third Rate ship on the 5 August 1790. Later he passed as a Naval Surgeon Third Rate on 6 Jne 1793. *(Ships were rated by the number of guns they carried).
Letter were written by him while he was on board the HMS Triumph during the Napoleonic wars and it seems that the ship was on patrol in the seas of the English coast. england had been at war with France from 1793 and the Battle of Trafalgar took place in 1805. There is a story in the family that a Dr Moffat was Nelson's personal srugeon, or one of them whether this is true or not has not yet been confirmed. Family letters refer to his father P (Peter) Moffat and his brothers William, Andrew and John and other members of the family at different times.
Description
Some information from Moffat from Ancient Scottish Days by Donald William Moffat Adelaide South Austrlia December 1985.P20. Birth entry Parish Church page 189.
Peter Moffat seems to have been quite well off as three of the boys went to medical school in Edinburgh. David, Thomas and John all studied there and all went to sea at some stage in their lives. [2]
